Undercover Boss...

Have you ever seen the show Undercover Boss?

It’s a show where CEOs, Founders, C-Suite leadership representatives and owners come down from what the people call the Ivy Tower and work with the actual employees at various site locations or departments within the business they run. Often throughout the show these managers discover what is really happening on the ground-level of the business and they also get an opportunity to gain experience more about the people who keep the business going and work the front-line with customers and clients. From local food and bar chains to big business these bosses leave with a newfound perspective for what they have built and the true essence of the people who work for them.

In some episodes they realized they had a bad reputation …. and others that people spoke highly of them though some had never even met them directly. As I thought of the stories and some of the lessons learned by these undercover boss participants I began thinking “What type of BOSS “am I? My mind went a variety of ways because of course being President of the HIDDEN GEM community I almost pride myself on being an Undercover BOSS for the sake of privacy. What would the people who work for you in your business, family, friends and more say about you as the Undercover Boss? Would it be positive?

Would people be spot on to judge your character by the way your business is running? or by those you have left in charge?

Would people be able to see the mission and vision statement on the wall in action?

Would people feel valued, seen or included without you being present?

Think about it.

These moments will reveal some things about everyone involved in the company. Do you need to re-define your own definition of BOSS so that it correlates with the people you serve and those that serve you? (Whew, I can go deep right there but I will save it for another time)

As you navigate the remainder of this week in preparation for a new month ask yourself and those around you the tough questions. What type of BOSS am I to you? (Momager, Dad the Disciplinarian, Leader, Visionary) How can I better support you in the work you do for our company (family, friendship…), department (House, Team, Org)? What do you need more of? Less of?

Share your goals in hopes that they will share their goals so that alignment and misalignment can be addressed once and for all.

I have a motto you won’t know unless you go!!

In this case, you won’t know unless you release your EGO and place yourself in the shoes of those who have also been undercover to your BOSS! (Message)

Moral of Story: Check -in with the people you love and check-in with you too to ensure that what you are putting out is being received in the way that can benefit the organization ( family) for the long -haul. Get to know the heart of people and you will understand the mind of people!

Ps. One of my consultants hugged me today before she left the office , why - because I took the time to be get to know her heart this week and understand her work in person and not behind the phone or screen. I asked things that nobody has in years and now her delivery makes sense to me and vice versa. Get on the ground , get your hands dirty! Dad's see what Momma does everyday , Momma's consider what Dad is doing to provide and protect the family , Husbands ,Wives, Daughters and Sons be considerate as you BOSS.

Have an amazing day!

xoxo
