The Character Arc- Lakika Scott

The Character Arc

I’m certain that many of you have binge-watched a show that you love. If you’re like me, you realize that there is nothing like some good character development. What do I mean? A good example is a character of a show that you initially view as the villain, but by season 3 you’ve grown to understand, or even like them. Throughout the show, an arc or pivot occurs that transforms the inner journey of a character over the course of story. This can be referred to as a character’s arc. Yes! This is intentional. This is just like real life. It’s not always that these people are good or bad people, it’s just that there were a “visible” set of circumstances that shaped our perception of their character a bit pre-maturely. This happens frequently when there’s multiple episodes and even seasons of a show. It’s truly astounding that we find ourselves pre-judging others based on the point we walked in on their story. There are positive and negative arcs. The objective is to have grace and use wisdom when interpreting someone else’s story. People’s roles change throughout the story and as quick as you are considered the hero, you will be considered the villain in someone else’s mind. That’s because, the view of these characters and their behaviors is subjective. Whereas the writer is the only one that knows the intent as these characters were created as a part of a bigger story that is being told. The only thing that’s certain in these characters is the ending and that too has been written. The Arc of your character involves personality change, physical change, emotional, and behavioral change. All of which changes the trajectory of your story throughout your life. Haven’t you noticed bad shows/movies typically have static characters. These are characters that remain the same the entire time. Ugh!

Change is good. Arc and pivot is necessary. Static is bad. Your story is still being written! The author is the BEST! Play your role!
