“Checking your coat (motives) at the door”~ By Lakika Scott

It’s easy to be motivated by praise and affirmation. But what if nobody ever sees you? Will you still toil and work as though everyone is watching. A good way to move toward being unbothered is if you no longer desire to do things for a projected outcome. Having a means to an end is temporary. Once you complete that, then what? That’s why people often find it hard to stop and celebrate their victories. The victory wasn’t for self-improvement or to honor God. It was for people who could care less about the work you put into a thing. Think about this, God will take a small menial task and make it fulfill you only because you completed it unto him. You did a “whole” big thing that caught all of the “likes” of the people. That felt good but to be honest, the last really fulfilling thing you’ve done was cleaned your closet! See how that works! 😊

It’s important that we check our motives and understand that doing things that we think pleases/honors others will keep us in a loop of people-pleasing and no satisfaction will be felt as the works were not for God’s approval. Check your motives/coat at the door. Would you do “that thing” if no one could see you? If not, hang it up!

Unfashionably,
