Blurred Vision by Lakika Scott

Blurred Vision

The date was January 2020, and it was time for my annual eye appointment. This was no big deal as I’ve never needed glasses, so this was basically a formality for me. It was during my eye vision test that I realized something had changed. The further the letters on that chart moved back, the blurrier they got. I could no longer call out those tiny letters in the distance effortlessly anymore! This was quite a reality check for me as I had just turned 40. I would find out that this was just the beginning of my “vision test.” The pandemic would soon ensue, and life had changed at a very rapid rate. I was now wearing glasses to read and due to the pandemic, I started to read more. Was this a coincidence? Not only could I see clearer when I read, I started to read content that changed my perspective on things. My vision was shifting, and my perception was changing. You see, the brain is conditioned to put things together even when we can’t see clearly. Prior to the pandemic, I was doing just that. I was seeing life and people through those “rose colored glasses.” Here’s another example. I was listening to the Steve Harvey morning show when the infamous “Strawberry Letter” was read. A lady had advised that she married a man because they had a child together. She wanted to keep their family together. Her job required overnight travel occasionally and she’d leave their child with her husband who had expressed he wasn’t comfortable watching the child by himself. Might I add, she also believed her husband wasn’t being faithful. She went on to say that she would facetime him and the background would be blurred. You know, just like the backgrounds on those TEAMS and Zoom meetings! She stated although the background was blurred, she could still see that the background wasn’t their home. Before we unpack here, this goes back to how I explained her brain was still trying to put things together despite what she saw. Her sight was clear, but the background was blurry. Steve immediately posed the question, “Is the background blurry or is your vision blurry? He’s already shown you what you needed to see, but you are making yourself see otherwise?” The background was her vision, which was blurred and prevented her from believing what her eyes saw.

In my case, I “literally” needed glasses which shifted my sight and vision. However, it was my vision that needed fine tuning. You can have your eyes closed and still see with good vision, but this requires a great deal of self-awareness, obedience, and faith. Vision requires you to be okay with what is true and not just what you want to believe.

Is your vision blurry?
