As a visual artist/painter, one thing I'm most hesitant to create is a portrait of someone. People often make this request and I avoidthis part of my creativity at all costs! Why, might you ask? One thing visual artists have is this ability to see things that others

don't see. If I create a portrait of you, I am doing so out of my own artistic abilities and perception.

Perception is the key word here.

Even with a point of reference, or photo of you in this instance, I am still creating based on my perception of this photo.

Our perceptions are shaped by our life experiences and interpretations thereof. All of which are different. I say all of this to say that we sometimes DRAW conclusions of individuals based on our own insecurities, fears, biases, and self-formed

narratives. This can be a miscalculation on our part. It's important that we are self-aware and make sure that we seek healing and help in these areas to have a more accurate reflection of individuals. Doing so will help you see the beauty in the trees, flowers, and nature, instead of just the allergies produced from its growth.

I know that healing is required even in artistic expression, so I'm slow to create an image of one that doesn't accurately reflect all of God's beauty in them. It doesn't have to be all blossomy and pretty, because the thorns are beautiful too. We just have to put them in their proper place and that's not the surface where they are blooming and facing the SON.

Heal and See Things as they are intended, not through the lenses of Hurt.

See and Be God's Masterpiece.

Respectfully,

Lakika Scott
